Tiptons Worldwide : linking Tipton cities, towns and hamlets across the globe
Site Author and Aim of the site
Prof Emeritus Ken Jukes (Ken!) is a native of Tipton, Staffordshire, England, and a Life Member of Tipton Civic Society. He is now mainly resident in Sarasota, Florida, where he was elected 2010 President of Sarasota British Club.

Tipton, UK, is about 10 miles from Birmingham and at the heart of  the Black Country, a term deriving from the vision of the area during and beyond the Industrial Revolution when the region supported a wide range of heavy iron and steel based industries as well as coal mining. During Ken's travels, particularly in the USA, he has come across other places called Tipton and has an interest in the locations of such places and in the origin of their names. Some may be linked back to Tipton (Staffordshire) whose name is reputed to derive from a Saxton chieftan or warrior named Tibb or Tibba. The name evolved to the name Tipton which appears on a map of 1577 in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I  (Source: " A Town by Any Other Name", John Brimble).

This website is organised so as to identify and bring together the community of cities, towns and hamlets named Tipton throughout the world, together with related places including the title Tipton. Where they are known, a summary is given for each, the web addresses of various sites are identified, and links to them are included. Some have little information to date and so anything you can add will be very welcome. There are of course people named "Tipton". One wonders about the connection of peoples' name to the original placename. No attempt is made on this website to address the issue of people named Tipton.

So far 17 Tiptons have been located, 15 in the USA, one in Australia and one in the UK. We anticipated that there may be one or more Tiptons in Africa, but have not discovered any. A further 9 "companion" places such as Tipton Ridge, Tipton Saint John, and Tiptonville have been located and these are detailed on the Companion webpage. The smallest populated Tipton seems to be Tipton, Wyoming, with a population of just 14. Also there is a Tipton with apparently zero population, being a site for snow depth reading!

Please email Ken if you know of other Tiptons and any related websites that can be added and also if you have relevant information and/or pictures about them.
